Family Challenge: Grocery Day

As a mom who cherishes her quick trips to the grocery store childless...this will be a true challenge.  Teaching your children about budgets and money is soooooooooooo important.  Teaching your kids about healthy eating choices should also be a top priority.  This challenge gives you the opportunity to combine the two.

Today's Challenge:  Give each child a mini grocery list with 3-5 things listed.  Allocate some funds for them and take them to the store with you.  Give them one YOU CHOOSE option on the bottom of their list. Let them first select the 'Must Have' options first-give them an estimate of how much they have spent.  Point out buying off brands and make sure the kids understand these are priority foods (milk/lunch meat, etc.--things you must have).

Then once you have all the must items and you have the kids remaining funds in their hands--tell them they can choose an item to eat on their own. Take them first down the cookie aisle and the fruit aisle--let them see all the choices they have-point out the healthy options.  Let your kids choose what items they can 'afford' with their funds-guide their decision-if you have more than one child they can together choose one healthy fruit option and then one cookie option.

Use this time to bond with your kids--if there's no kids-your husband will not enjoy this trip but it would mean great time together and he can help understand the grocery dynamics that has become your routine.

Challenge Issued!
