Physical Challenge: To Count or Not To Count

There are many out there who want to loose weight or be healthier yet reject the concept of calorie counting. The complaints are it's to stringent...what if I don't know the calories...I want to enjoy my food. Let's think about the future. You can enjoy a piece of chocolate cake just not everyday. In order to be a HealthierU in 2013 you need to establish a baseline and learn where you can cut and enjoy freedom within your eating boundaries.

Today's Challenge:  For 3 days count your calories. There are now apps you can get on your phone that makes this super easy and is very accurate at estimating the calories consumed.  Do this so you can establish a baseline.

This will help you examine how much you truly need and how much you don't. As a society pumped up on soda and fast food-this will be a huge eye opening experience.  Good Luck!

Spritiual Challenge: What's Your Mediatation?

If someone could see what's going on in your brain or heart--would it make them blush?  Would they start singing with you?  Would they be a Smarter/Happier/Better THEM because they can see the meditations of your heart?

Today's Challenge: Read Psalms 19:14:  Apply it to your daily life.  Push out all the negative thoughts and emotions and let your meditations be pleasing. Let your meditations make a BETTERU!

Family Challenge: Grocery Day

As a mom who cherishes her quick trips to the grocery store childless...this will be a true challenge.  Teaching your children about budgets and money is soooooooooooo important.  Teaching your kids about healthy eating choices should also be a top priority.  This challenge gives you the opportunity to combine the two.

Today's Challenge:  Give each child a mini grocery list with 3-5 things listed.  Allocate some funds for them and take them to the store with you.  Give them one YOU CHOOSE option on the bottom of their list. Let them first select the 'Must Have' options first-give them an estimate of how much they have spent.  Point out buying off brands and make sure the kids understand these are priority foods (milk/lunch meat, etc.--things you must have).

Then once you have all the must items and you have the kids remaining funds in their hands--tell them they can choose an item to eat on their own. Take them first down the cookie aisle and the fruit aisle--let them see all the choices they have-point out the healthy options.  Let your kids choose what items they can 'afford' with their funds-guide their decision-if you have more than one child they can together choose one healthy fruit option and then one cookie option.

Use this time to bond with your kids--if there's no kids-your husband will not enjoy this trip but it would mean great time together and he can help understand the grocery dynamics that has become your routine.

Community Difference: Pick it Up!

This challenge isn't as much about getting organized in your own life but it sets the stage to change your community for the good.  Spring arrived! Now you can take family walks and hit the park--fun is about to be in full swing.

Just like you've spent some time over the past few weeks getting your own yard tools ready, etc. Look at your community yard.  Is there a local park that you and your family could take some bags and pick up trash together. Not only are you teaching your kids the importance of taking care of the environment you are setting an example for those around you.

Today's Challenge:  Choose a community clean-up project and get involved. It doesn't have to be huge or involve a bunch of people--maybe it's just you and your family.  Choose to plant some flowers at the park-pick up trash-do some work at a local church yard.

Set the wheels of change in motion--it starts with U!

Relationship Challenge: Explaining the Tough Stuff

Last night my daughter produced a tough questions/conversation...
"Mommy, I don't want you to die..."
"Mommy isn't going to die-why are you worried?"
"I know you aren't now but you will get old and then die--I know you will go to heaven but I don't want you to die."
____________________________________________________________________________________

As my little daughter sobbed in my lap-I know the answers I supplied her with were inadequate to offer her peace in her big heart. Difficult conversations happen between people no matter the age, intellect level, status, or relationship. Those conversations/questions can range a ton of topics.  Dying, Sickness, Cheating, Money, Premarital Sex--the list could go on and on.  What answers can you provide that will provide understanding or peace in difficult circumstances?

Today's Challenge:  Identify 3 difficult conversation topics you could potentially have with those close to you.  Prepare yourself-how will you answer those questions about death, boyfriend break-up, money, addiction...whatever your topic maybe. Journal your answers-you may need to take more time and pray and seek our advice or other resources for these answers.

I would say, if you are a Christian pray that GOD prepares your heart for the questions.  Another piece of advice it to always work to keep the lines of communication open and flowing between those people who's relationships are most important to you--often time it's just the ear they are needing.

Challenge 113: Leading By Example--Walk the Talk

We underestimate what it means to lead by example and walk the talk constantly as leaders in our home, business and personal lives.  Whether we are at home leading our family or at work working to move the profitability needle the importance of 'Leading By Example' says more than our words ever will.

The following excerpt is from Mind Tools.Com in a article where they discussed leading by example. Those who make a difference start by changing their own ways before they ever recommend changing someone else. Lead by Example and Walk the Talk!

Today's Challenge: Read the few paragraphs below and get ready to Lead By Example...it all starts with you!

Why It Matters

There's an old saying about the difference between a manager and a leader: "Managers do things right. Leaders do the right things." (It's best to be both a manager and a leader – they're just different processes.)
As a leader, part of your job is to inspire the people around you to push themselves – and, in turn, the company – to greatness. To do this, you must show them the way by doing it yourself.
Stop and think about the inspiring people who have changed the world with their examples.

Consider what Mahatma Gandhi accomplished through his actions: He spent most of his adult life living what he preached to others. He was committed to nonviolent resistance to protest injustice, and people followed in his footsteps. He led them, and India, to independence – because his life proved, by example, that it could be done.  Although Gandhi's situation is very different from yours, the principle is the same. When you lead by example, you create a picture of what's possible. People can look at you and say, "Well, if he can do it, I can do it." When you lead by example, you make it easy for others to follow you.

Look at legendary businessman, Jack Welch of General Electric. Welch knew that to push GE to new heights, he had to turn everything upside down. So that's just what he did.
He developed the whole idea of a "boundaryless organization." This means that everyone is free to brainstorm and think of ideas – instead of waiting for someone "higher up" in the bureaucracy to think of them first. He wanted his team "turned loose," and he promised to listen to ideas from anyone in the company. And he did. Everyone from the lowest line workers to senior managers got his attention – if they had something to say or a new idea that might make the company better. It wasn't just "talk," and it didn't take his team long to figure that out.

Welch stayed true to his passions and what he knew was right. As a result, GE became an incredibly successful company under his management. His team was always willing to follow his lead, because the people within it knew that he always kept his word.
What does this mean for you? If you give yourself to your team and show them the way, then, most likely, they'll follow you anywhere.
